Explaining MS Boundaries to Roommates

Close Quarters + BOUNDARIES

As the close quarters of the pandemic are established; you too will need to establish your boundaries. In order to explain the threshold of your newly imposed limits to others, you will no doubt need to explain and/or re-explain what a relapse is and why you cannot predict or control how it is affecting you.

It will be best to formulate and rehearse a script suitable both for an adult audience, and a toddler after a chocolate sundae but prepared for one after 4 affogatos and a new puppy; to be thoroughly prepared.

Every individual’s boundaries are different, therefore, your elevator speech will need to be tailored to suit your circumstances. We have prepared a sample script below:

Drunk Bouncers Version

Starring:

da Club/building………….Body

Walls……………………….Muscles

Bouncers………………….Nerves

Managers………………....Myelin Sheath

Fights………………………Symptoms

Water……………………….Steroids/treatment

Picture this……..

My body is a nightclub, the muscles are the walls, the nerves are the bouncers and the myelin sheath are the managers who keep everyone communicating and working as smoothly as possible.

During a relapse, there may, or may not be visible damage to the exterior of the building, but there is always plenty of action inside. My nerves are a rowdy, belligerent, drunk crew of unsupervised bouncers. They have trouble communicating with each other across the club and management’s (myelin sheath) not there to facilitate direction or instruction.

During a relapse the drunk bouncers are always acting up and at the center of fights (symptoms) in one part of the club or another. No two fights are alike, and nobody can predict how long they will last. Some fights last longer than others, some are just minor skirmishes, sometimes there are multiple fights occurring concurrently, sometimes they are mild, sometimes they are painstakingly acute with casualties.

We can’t control all the drunk bouncers causing trouble inside, we just have to be diplomatic and kind, offer water (steroids or treatment), wait for them to sober up, and hope they didn’t cause too much permanent damage.

In the meantime, you can help me by…………...
